Journal 4: Working Titles

After we decided our story, ideas have been buzzing around my head. I thinking about changing the working title from Monty’s Medicine to Neverest. It’s shorter and it uses a pun to tell what the story’s about. (Get it? Never + rest to sound like Everest.) Maybe it’s also what we should call the substance Monty creates. I’ve also thought of Vocelyne. It sounds like something from a dystopian science fiction movie. Maybe that’s what we want?

Jack and I have been talking a bit about theme and we wonder if we should include a small message, like “There is rest for the weary” or something.

Yesterday I lent Jack my book Screenplay by Syd Field. (I was a little reluctant to do so because I am very particular and cautious about my paperback books. I decided it was for the greater good. I spent the rest of the day feeling like a part of my soul was missing.) I’ve already read it and I suggest he should to, at least the chapter called Building a Character.

For me, I’ve been thinking about specific scenes. In the back of my mind, I’ve been thinking about the opening. Monty riding his bike after to his great amount of activities with a sense of haste. He returns late to his house and stops by a poster of College University, (I’m working on the name) his dream school. He rubs the poster saying, “Just one more year.” He sits at his desk to finish his homework. We see him get up the next morning without getting any sleep. He goes to school and the cycle continues except there is much more strain involved.

I’ve been also thinking about one key side effect of the Vocelyne that Monty makes that gets more prominent as the story progresses. The person who use Vocelyne is more likely to get an electric shock. It’s small at first but eventually lightning strikes and the object in strikes doesn’t need to conduct electricity.

On the production side, I’ve counted my money I’m willing to spend on the project and created a list of necessary production equipment.
