Sharkwing: The Lost Tapes

A video sketch comedy show!

I wore many hats, but mainly:

Lead Editor

Where Problem Meets Opportunity

Sharkwing Sketch Comedy is a club at the University of Georgia where we produce comedy sketches mostly for the stage. Since this year we had to limit gatherings, we decided to turn ourselves into a rag-tag team of guerilla filmmakers and put our sketch comedy show on the big screen!

Making a Video Sketch Comedy Show

We created The Lost Tapes over the course of one month. The Sharkwing troupe acted as both cast and crew to sketches people wrote and directed. Being one of the people with the most prior film experience, beyond being a crew member, I was also offering advice on how to execute a sketch. From my experience, it’s hard enough making one short film, but making a sketch comedy show is like producing many short films at the same time. Not to mention, we also needed to work with extra safety precautions because of the COVID-19 pandemic. Regardless, everyone put their best foot forward, and we were able to come out with something we were proud of.

Here are a few sketches I worked on in particular:

Pre-Production Planning Pickpocket

Even the simplest of sketches required prior planning if we wanted the humor to land. Here are the storyboards for Pickpocket, a blackout sketch that lasts less than a minute.

Being the Lead Editor

I was responsible for putting the whole show together in post production and exporting it. It was a massive undertaking with as ambitious a project this was, but luckily I got to lead a whole editing team (a dream come true!) We divided all 13 sketches amongst four editors. We also had a team of assistant editors that assembled any assets we might need. This included stock images or music. When leading even a small team like we had, it is essential to remain organized. I set the workflow, using Google Drive and sheets as our hub to track everyone’s progress.

Sharkwing: The Lost Tapes is one of the biggest projects I’ve helped produce so far, but with the help of talented individuals on the team, it was was one of the most fun to do without being one of the hardest to manage.
