The Ring Rescheduled

How It Started
I wrote The Ring Rescheduled (inspired by the movie The Ring) as an audition piece to join Sharkwing Sketch Comedy back in 2018. It got me a spot on the college troupe and was slated for production, but it was certainly going to be a difficult project to pull off. Who knew that a pandemic two years later would create the perfect opportunity to produce the sketch?
Some New Lighting Gear
After several years of student filmmaking and being at the mercy of DSLR sensors and natural light, I finally decided to invest in two LED light panels. I was amazed with how much these two lights could boost the quality of the production. The Ring Rescheduled is a film with low lighting, but scenes (especially those shot with DSLRs) need a healthy amount of light to be usable. Plus, because of the panel’s RGB capabilities, these lights unlocked more creative design choices for me.
Chances to Experiment
I had a pretty clear idea on how I wanted the production to go on set, but there were some things I found on the day that I really wanted to try. One of them was trying to use a skateboard as a dolly. The shot was not as usable as I had hoped, but it was fun to try anyway!
Final Thoughts
As you could probably tell with projects like Sharkwing: The Lost Tapes, during the COVID-19 pandemic, Sharkwing pivoted from being a primarily theater troupe to a video production team. I loved working with Sharkwing to produce video sketches because with our built in team of actors and crew members, it’s like having our own little studio. For as ambitious as putting together a video could be (especially mine because the visuals tend to be more complex) the “Sharkwing Studio” makes it easy and straightforward. I never feared about completing The Ring Rescheduled once we set our minds to it. In a way, it was a blessing that The Ring Rescheduled stayed in the file cabinet for so long. When we had to chance to produce it, we could really elevate it.
