Journal 14: Liquid Lightning?

November 23, 2015

Today was a successful day for the sophomore project. At first, I just wanted to cut everything until it was down to 10 pages. I asked for some writing advice from Darion D’Anjou, a filmmaker whom I met at the MRAC Film Festival yesterday. He took a shine to me and I to him. We both liked the same genres (sci-fi adventure like Interstellar.) He writes feature films and we he looked at my script, he suggested I format it like a feature. I thought he had an interesting point, but I wanted to stick with my old idea. Regardless, I’m sure we’ll keep in touch.

Anyway, I sat down at my computer ready to hammer away at it. I wanted to rip away everything except for the bare bones of the story that was feasible. I decided that the first thing I’d cut would be College University. I reasoned that it doesn’t play a big enough role in the overall storyline and it added some unnecessary complications. Just cutting out the College University part took it down from 19 pages to 15. I wasn’t sure what else I could cut after that, so I decided to fill in the story holes, mainly involving Maddox and Romaine’s side story with the Liquid Rubber (I renamed it from Rubber Spray).

Before I knew it, I was away, writing and revising the entire story. I realized, I didn’t need Vocelyne version 2 (called Liquid Lightning), the problems in this version were relatively solvable. I think that being away from it for a long time actual help me get to this moment. I can say the second draft of Vocelyne (or at least draft 1.9 because I may have missed a meeting between Romaine and Maddox) was complete. However, I was back to 19 pages. Oh well. I don’t think we have to worry about hitting the 10 minute mark, now I’m just worried if we will get all of the content.

I still have to get to the final draft though. There is still time for editing! (I think the next thing I want to try is removing Ms. Richardson from the story entirely. I don’t want a hassle trying to get a teacher into the story.) I might need to send new copies to those who edited the first draft. As you can see, I’m pretty excited for what I’ve done for draft 2. I hope it’s not just me who likes it.

I scheduled a meeting with Jack for tomorrow. We are going to discuss cast, crew, budget, equipment and props or things that we will need to acquire on Black Friday. I’ve begun compiling a list, but so far, it only has a microphone adapter and an audio recorder.

P.S. I’m not sure how I feel about the name Vocelyne. I don’t think it’s too late to change it to Liquid Lightning.
